ANTHONY BARTHELL
Favorite Quote: "The only thing you have in life is your word. So be true to it or no one will ever believe it"

Anthony is a Rocker Fund skater, which means that you can help him achieve his short track goals by donating to him directly. His 'in his own words' biography and donation information can be found at TheRockerFund.org

To read and/or contribute more info about Anthony, check out his thread at Boots & Blades.

Anthony did the 'Rocker-U Interv-U' on August 29, 2009, and the following profile is based on that interview and other media sources:

PERSONAL STATS:
DOB: 12/19/(old as dirt to be a skater)1977
Birthplace: High Point, NC
Hometown: All over - mom's side NC; dads side OH MY WHERE DO I START. hahah lets just go with GA & FL
Current Training Location: Salt Lake City, with Jun (the silent assassin) Yeo
Favorite Distance to Skate: 500M - anything more than that is just ridiculous!
Boots & Blades: Laurent Daignault boots / Bont Platinum blades

A PERSONAL NOTE:
Anthony was one of the first skaters that I was personally acquainted with - back in the 'Yahoo Group' days, he offered via e-mail to help our group with hotel accommodations in SLC as we were planning our first-ever get-together for the 2007 US Championships. At that event, the parent of another skater told me that there was someone I just HAD to meet, claiming that he was the nicest person I'd ever meet in my life. Of course, it was Anthony! Michelle and I feel privileged to call him a friend...

The Rocker-U Interv-U:

Part 1: Standard Questions

How did you get started in the sport and where have you trained?
My journey... Well, I started at the age of 25. I got interested after watching the 02' Olympics. I skated quads back in 90-91. Most of these kids were still walking around peeing on themselves, with diapers on - come on now, haha! Seeing Joey Cheek skate made me remember when I skated against him back in the HP and Piedmont days. I started skating ice in Kissimmee FL under Doug Deboy and stayed there for 2-1/2 to 3 years. Then I moved to SLC.

What are the highlights of your skating career so far?
I'd have to say skating a 1:29 Time trial. They are my worst enemy!! hahaha

What's the worst skating injury you've ever had?
Hmmmm, well I've had two so I'll let you be the judge. 1) I fell and hit the boards head on, missing the pads by a foot. I broke my arm and busted my head. Blood was all over the ice. I didn't know my arm was broken and didn't go to the hospital until the next day. I drove home from practice which was an hour and a half away. 2) I fell and severely sprained my ankle. A doctor told me I would've been better off breaking it. To me that was the worst. I have bone spurs and arthritis in my ankle now.

Where is your favorite place to compete?
I think I'd have to say Midland - I love their ice.

What's the funniest (or craziest) thing you've ever seen happen on the ice?
You just need to come to one of our practices. Too many to come up with just one. We have an entertaining group. I love all of my teammates - even the special ones (you know who you are) hahaha!

What do you like to do when you're not skating?
SLEEP!!!! hahaha - well, spend time with my girlfriend and then sleep!

When you're away from home, what do you miss the most while you're gone?
My bed!

What have you sacrificed for your sport?
I turned down a management position that I wanted. Plus I'm away from family - but I wouldn't change a thing.

What are your goals over the next few years?
Well I'm pretty sure I'm gonna hang up my skates after this season, but you never know. I'm planning on getting back into hospitality management. I have a few other things brewing but we'll have to see how that plays out first - don't wanna jinx myself!

What do you see yourself doing after your skating career is over?
Working like a mad man. Managing a hotel - still don't wanna jinx myself so we'll stick with managing...

What will you miss the most about this time in your life?
The training, my teammates, coaches, the people I've met.

Part 2: JUST FOR FUN

Quick Fire:
Mountains or Beach? Beach - as long as I don't have to get into the water. 1 word - (SHARKS)
Dog or Cat? Dog
Cook at Home or Eat Out? Cook at Home
Sunsets or Sunrises? Sunrise - at the beach (East Coast)
Driver or Passenger? Driver
Jewelry: Silver or Gold? Silver
London or Paris? Paris
Coffee or Tea? Coffee
Baskin Robbins or Dairy Queen? DQ
Hockey or Basebell? Baseball

Favorites:
Pizza? Meat Lovers
Board Game? Dominoes, if that's considered a board game(?)
Winter Olympic Sport (other than speedskating)? Luge
US City? Tampa - loved it there!
Rainy Day Activity? Stay home, watch movies and sleep

Random Questions:
What is your most memorable Christmas present? My first bike. I didn't think O was getting one because I was being a bad kid - haha!
I never leave the house without...what? Who knows? I'm always leaving and losing things...
What period in history is the most interesting to you? The Battle of Gettysburg. I studied that a lot when I was in school.
Is there anything that you're really scared of? WILD SNAKES and SHARKS. If you wanna see me run and scream like a girl just let me see a snake outside somewhere - and I don't even know what I would do if I saw a shark! haha
What music group/artist do you own the most music from?? Luther Vandross - yup I'm into slow R & B and I'm probably listening to it during races - so if you see me with my Ipod on there's a chance that's who it is!

DOB: November 28, 1994
Hometown: San Clemente, California
Kendal trains with the Southern California Speedskating Association
Coach: Wilma Boomstra

Kendal is a young lady who loves the whole Speedskating experience. She thrives on racing and feels invigorated and excited when in action.

She has a fun side: Black and hot pink are her favorite color combinations, so she likes wearing her black & pink skin suit and has gloves with hot pink tips to match. When racing, she tucks her waist-length hair into a loose chignon and takes off with determination.

She also has a serious side: Kendal believes that having good character and treating others well is more defining than winning medals. Her favorite slogan is "Carpe-diem" (seize the moment). She hopes to go far in Speedskating, but in the mean time, she is enjoying the journey.

In her free-time, Kendal works hard at school, rides mountain bikes, surfs at her local beach, figure skates, is active in a church youth group, bakes cookies for friends, takes care of her 2 beloved Huskies, and keeps up on Facebook with all her skating friends across the USA.

Kendal appreciates all of the fans and supporters and says "Thank You with lots of exclamation points... for helping to make this fantastic sport grow!"

Some of Kendal's accomplishments during the 2008-2009 season:

Group 2 Champion - US Junior Championships; November 2008, Bay City, MI
Note: She qualified for top 16 for group 1 after her time trial but because she was under 14, the rules required that she skate in group 2
3rd Overall - North American Championships, Juvenile Ladies; December 2008, Madison, WI
Silver - 1000m; North American Championships, Juvenile Ladies
Silver - 666m; North American Championships, Juvenile Ladies
Gold - Ladies Relay; North American Championships (with teammates Tina Koenig, Lezleigh Jaworski and Sarah Chen)
Note: This is the second year in a row that Kendal was part of the NAM Gold medal relay team
Group 2 Champion - American Cup 3; January 2009, Green Bay, WI
Note: Once again, Kendal's time trial qualified her for group 1 but because of her age was required to skate in group 2
2nd Overall - National ST Championships (Age Class Nationals), Juvenile Ladies; March, 2009, Midland, MI
Silver - 500m; National ST Championships, Juvenile Ladies
Silver - 1500m; National ST Championships, Juvenile Ladies
4th place (Pewter) - 777m; National ST Championships, Juvenile Ladies
