UPDATE ON ALLISON BAVER - August 28, 2009

Allison's ST career and Olympic hopes seemed doomed after a devastating leg injury, but this 'bionic woman' has inspired all of us with her courage, determination, and love of the sport. SHE HAS REGISTERED FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS, and there is every indication that she will pull off yet another remarkable recovery...

Broken Leg Can't Shatter Baver's Spirit - According to Coach Laurent Daignault, "Her comeback is almost a miracle, the way she's skating right now with the short amount of time she had to recover... I feel like she's on the right track. She probably won't be at 100 percent but very close, maybe 90."

ALEX IZYKOWSKI

BRONZE MEDALIST IZYKOWSKI SUFFERS INJURIES IN CYCLING CRASH
by Times Staff
Friday March 06, 2009, 10:50 AM

Alex Izykowski's training program to get back on the ice with the U.S. Short Track men's speedskating team came to a screeching halt Tuesday.

The 2006 Olympic bronze medal relayer from Bay City was struck by a car on a bicycle training ride in Sandy, a suburb south of Salt Lake City.

Al Izykowski, Alex's father, said his son was riding about 25-30 miles per hour when a car turned in front of him Tuesday about noon. The 25-year-old Bay City Western grad smashed into the car and went head first into the vehicle.

"All things considering, Alex is lucky to be alive," Al Izykowski said.
Izykowski was treated and released from a local hospital. He suffered no head injuries, however, he has a broken nose and tooth and a sore shoulder.

Izykowski had been riding three to five hours in the mountains trying to recover from a hip injury.

"He was in good condition and I think, ready to come back on ice," his father said.

Alex Izykowski is expected to be back in Bay City on Tuesday for the 2009 U.S. Speedskating Nationals and American Cup Finals in Midland where his sister, Morgan, will be competing.

Alex, all of us at Rocker-U are grateful that you survived this close call - We look forward to your return to competition!

UPDATE ON ALLISON BAVER
From Peri Kinder, US Speedskating, Feb 26, 2009

Because of the great concern expressed by US Speedskating members, two-time Olympian Allison Baver issued the following statement regarding her injury at the ISU World Cup event in Sofia, Bulgaria.

"I've been surrounded by a lot of great surgeons and the surgery went very well. I'm in a hard cast for the next couple of weeks and I'll be in a soft cast for four weeks after that. I'm in a lot of pain and this whole situation is really hard for me but I'm very confident using Dr. Wen Chao.

I'll be immobile and will be off my feet for four to six weeks. I'm going forward and happy the surgery is out of the way. I'm able to progress and take things one step at a time. I'm looking at going to Colorado Springs to maximize my rehab and I'll try to be back on the ice as soon as possible.

Everyone has been so supportive and so caring. I'm counting my blessings every step of the way."

ALLISON BAVER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (FROM USS)
February 8, 2009--Sofia, Bulgaria.
Two-time Olympian Allison Baver (Reading, PA) collided with teammate Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL) during the third lap of the Ladies 1500m final at the ISU World Cup Short Track Speedskating event in Sofia, Bulgaria, leaving Baver with multiple fractures in her right leg. She will be flying back to Pennsylvania for surgery on Monday.

"She entered the pads in a really bad position and it was impossible to do anything to avoid this injury," said Laurent Daignault, National Short Track Assistant coach. "She'll have to have a long straight cast to keep her leg stable. It looks painful, but she has a really strong attitude."

All of us at Rocker U wish Allison a speedy and full recovery - a thread for well-wishes has been created at GotApolo.com
